The Science of Ultrasound
Who is in Pain?
- Musculoskeletal pain affects up to 85% of the general population and is a primary cause of health-care visits, absenteeism and early pensions.
- According to the Arthritis Foundation in 2006, one in five Americans, or 46 million people suffer from some form of arthritis.
- The Journal of the American Medical Association, found that spending on spine treatments in the United States totaled nearly $86 billion in 2005, a rise of 65 percent from 1997, after adjusting for inflation. Further, the researchers found that people with spinal problems spent about $6,096 each on medical care in 2005.
- The National Headache Foundation found more than 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches with 78 % of those being tension headaches, and that in excess of more than $4 billion is spent on over-the-counter medication.
ProMedx Pain Management System
ProMedx is on the leading edge of pain management, and have combined evidence based therapeutic ultrasound and phonopheresis to help those suffering to manage their pain and lead more productive lives. Witness the following:
Ultrasound has been used successfully to treat inflammation (1), increase the rate and quality of tissue healing (2), facilitate nerve regeneration (3), enhance fracture healing (4) and increase tissue strength (5). In addition, we have collected pilot data demonstrating ultrasound’s ability to diminish trigger point sensitivity (6) thereby making it a safe and effective modality in the management of many forms of common pain syndromes including headaches, backaches, myofascial pain and fibromyalgia.
Conditions Treated: Roll your mouse over the various hotspots to see conditions that can treated by ultrasound.
Phonophoresis, the use of ultrasound to enhance the absorption of substances through the skin, is yet another powerful clinical application of ultrasound. (7) The two main determinants of the effectiveness of phonophoresis include the characteristics of the incident ultrasound beam and the type of substance/molecule being absorbed. While increased transdermal delivery of molecules is seen across a wide range of ultrasound frequencies (8), lower frequencies (20-100 KHz) have demonstrated a 1000-fold superiority over their higher frequency counterparts. Indeed, experimental data exists for increased absorption of large molecules with proteins such as insulin (9) heparin (10) and tetanus toxoid vaccine (11)) using low frequency phonophoresis.
The ProWave pain management system takes advantage of the phonophoresis effect to augment the pain relieving effects of ultrasound. By employing a uniquely formulated conducting gel which contains natural pain relieving compounds (analgesics), pain relief is felt almost immediately by patients; longer lasting effects are experienced when used every 4-6 hours for a period of 72 hours. The combination of ultrasound and the specially formulated ProWave gel offer convenient and unparalleled relief from pain and inflammation.
Prowave Ultrasonic Gel
Why is our gel so effective? Consider these facts: each one of our active ingredients is proven to have benefits in pain relief, blood flow and combating inflammation; moreover, if one takes an oral pain reliever, it will travel throughout your body, minimizing its local effect and may also have side effects such as nausea. If one has tennis elbow as an example, it is far more effective to treat the afflicted area directly, and further, with ultrasound, our specially formulated gel can be driven into the tissue via the process of phonophoresis to further enhance the beneficial effects.
Prowave Ultrasonic Massager (coming soon)
The latest in ultrasonic therapy research is being converted into a hand held unit which can be used in the home. In today’s busy world, think about how often you can make the time to see a chiropractor, a physiotherapist or a doctor to get treatment for pain on an ongoing basis. Now think about the prospect of going once to a clinic for a diagnosis and being given a proven treatment regimen that can be administered at home or at the office that is simple and non-invasive. While our gel can increase the effectiveness of any ultrasonic unit, the soon-to-be-released ProWave Massager was designed in tandem with the gel in order to maximize therapeutic effect.
